MARY’S LOVE AND FAITH

BY FR VALENTINE NNAMDI EGBUONU, MSP

St. Mary Magdalene

The first reading of today is very expressive. It expresses a strong emotional feeling of love that metamorphosed into an action of a deep search for a loved one. This kind of search was replicated in the gospel reading of today by Mary Magdalene who relentlessly searched for Christ her Lord. She woke up very early on Sunday morning and rushed to the tomb in search of Jesus. And scarcely after she mistook Jesus for the watchman, she discovered it was the Lord whom she sought for.

Mary’s love for Jesus was so sincere and transparent. When she couldn’t find the body of Jesus in the tomb, she hurried to call Peter and John to come and assist her in the search. Peter and John outran her to the tomb. But before she got there, they had gone. Mary remained and searched patiently and never stopped crying. She did not yet know that Christ had risen. The volume of the tears in her eyes blinded her from recognising Jesus at first glance. It could be that she had to wipe her tears and look again to discover it was Jesus when Jesus called her name. Her search was not in vain. Jesus finally revealed himself to her and sent her to announce his resurrection.

Just like Mary Magdalene, many of us may be experiencing a very worrisome situation. A kind of situation that has left us wearied and confused as we wait on God to show up and free us. God does not turn down a holy desire especially when it is accompanied by faith. Whatever our situation may be, let us emulate this saintly virtue of Mary Magdalene who never gave up in patiently waiting and hoping. Our trust and love for Jesus has to reflect in our relationship with him. If we trusted in Jesus, we would believe and hope on him even in his silence. God does not work within our frame which is why we should never tire as we hope on him. Just don’t go away. Remain steadfast and wait.
