ST CLARE, V. (Memorial) White

Clare was from a wealthy and royal family. From her earliest years she was devoted to prayer and practiced mortification. At the age of 18 she was inspired by the preaching of St Francis of Assisi in the Church of San Giorgio. Through the spiritual guide of St Francis, Clare left earthly possession and vowed herself finally to the service of Jesus Christ and later on founded the Order of Poor Ladies (Poor Clares) at San Damiano, and led it for 40 years. Clare’s mother and sisters later joined the Order.

THE DEMANDS OF TRUE DISCIPLESHIP

Before we take up a task, it is necessary to consider whether we can handle such task or not. Wisdom requires that we pay attention to the nitty-gritty of any task and the demands and then decide whether to go on with it or not. Before his death, Jesus made known to his disciples the demands of being his follower. They will necessarily have to suffer for his sake and for the sake of the kingdom if they chose to follow him. This condition was not optional but a requirement that qualifies them to be called a true disciple.

Jesus further said to them that whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for his sake will find it. In these words, Jesus revealed that we do not live to die but we die to live. Our life truly begins when we die to live eternally in heaven. And this is why we need to make every sacrifice to gain this life even if we would have to undergo severe suffering and pain.

So while we get busy with the daily affairs of life, let us not lose sight of the heavenly life. No amount of wealth or possession can buy us the life here on earth or the life hereafter. We need to work out our salvation through steadfastness and perseverance. And this will definitely involve the cross. So let the words of Jesus today give us the courage to carry the crosses that come our way for his sake so as to merit the life that endures eternally in heaven.  In Christ our pain is our gain. Our endurance will win us our life.

Lord God, we pray for the fortitude to faithfully carry our crosses daily. Amen.
