KNOW YOUR FAITH
BY FR VALENTINE NNAMDI EGBUONU, MSP
The question put to Jesus by the Pharisees in the gospel of today was to test his knowledge of the law. Jesus knew that the question was a test. So his answer does not imply that he played into their wiles, but he only ceased that moment as an opportunity to teach his disciples and the crowd at large about the true meaning of the commandments. Otherwise, Jesus would not bother teaching the Pharisees what they already know. Jesus is not known for falling for any trick or test.
But the response of Jesus shows he has a perfect knowledge of the law. He did not only enlighten his disciples and the crowd by his reply, but also gave strength and certainty to the knowledge and belief of the Pharisees on the teaching of the law which they have always upheld and taught. It is a good thing to have an in depth understanding of our beliefs; for it will not only give us the confidence our faith needs but will also give us the opportunity to defend our faith and enlighten others.
So, there is a need for us today to reflect and see whether we have an in depth knowledge of the faith and beliefs that we profess. The Catholic Church has a number of doctrines that many Catholics today cannot defend. Doctrines that we believe not because we understood and are convinced of them, but because we are Catholics and have to accept them by reason of our membership. We need to understand that a good knowledge of the faith we profess can water the nascent faith of others. There are many out there who need some enlightenment on the teachings of the Church. We can become that instrument of God that could enlighten and water their growing faith. So, knowing your faith could strengthen and sustain the faith of someone today.
PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Lord Jesus, we pray for the zeal and disposition to deepen and defend our faith. Amen.
